Short answer: Domine Eduard Osok Airport (DEO) in Sorong is the gateway to Raja Ampat, fed by domestic flights from Jakarta (CGK), Makassar (UPG) and Manado (MDC). Nearly every one of those routings involves an overnight or a red-eye, and almost every phinisi embarkation is in the morning. Arrive in Sorong the day before you board. Not as a luxury — as insurance against the one delayed domestic leg that would otherwise cost you the whole cruise.
Which airport do you fly into for Raja Ampat?
Sorong, West Papua. The airport code is DEO and the full name is Domine Eduard Osok. There is no international arrival here — you clear immigration in Jakarta, Bali, Makassar or Manado and continue on a domestic ticket.
Waisai, on Waigeo, has a small airstrip, but it is not how liveaboard guests arrive. Your phinisi will either be waiting in Sorong harbour or will meet you after the ferry crossing to Waisai, which we cover in detail in the Sorong–Waisai ferry guide.

Schedules in eastern Indonesia are revised more often than in the west. Treat any specific flight number you find online as a starting point for a search, not as a timetable to plan around, and book the domestic legs as a single ticket where you can so that the airline owns the connection rather than you.
Why does arriving a day early matter so much here?
Because a phinisi does not wait. A liveaboard sailing to Misool has an overnight transit of roughly ten to twelve hours ahead of it and a dive schedule that has to work with tides. If you land in Sorong at 11:00 on embarkation day and the boat sailed at 09:00, there is no taxi that will catch it.
An extra night in Sorong costs a modest hotel room. A missed embarkation costs the cruise. We have never once had a guest tell us afterwards that the buffer night was wasted, and we have several times had guests thank us for it after a domestic leg went wrong.
The night before also buys you something less obvious: a shower, a proper sleep, and the chance to repack. Nobody dives well on the back of thirty hours of transit.
What about baggage limits and dive gear?
This is where Raja Ampat trips most often come unstuck. Domestic Indonesian allowances are lower than the long-haul allowance you arrived on, and a full dive kit with regulators, a BCD, wetsuit and camera housing will exceed them.
- Weigh everything at home. Assume the domestic allowance is meaningfully tighter than your international one and buy excess in advance online, where it is cheaper than at the counter.
- Regulators and camera bodies fly in the cabin. Always. If a checked bag goes astray in Makassar it will reach Sorong eventually — but probably not before your boat has left.
- Soft bags only. Hard cases have nowhere to live in a phinisi cabin, and tenders are wet.
- Consider renting. BCDs and wetsuits rent easily on board. Bringing your own mask, computer, regs and exposure suit and renting the bulk is a rational trade in 27–30 °C water.

How do you get from DEO to the boat?
Sorong is a working port city, not a resort town, and the airport sits close to it. Transfers to the harbour or to a city hotel are short — a matter of minutes rather than hours. On our charters the transfer is arranged and met; you are looking for a name board, not for a taxi.
From there, two patterns apply. Either you board in Sorong harbour and the vessel steams overnight into the dive area, or you take the fast ferry to Waisai and board there, with Marine Park Office check-in commonly around 11:30. Where should you stay the night before?
Sorong has a handful of serviceable business hotels near the port and the airport. Expectations should be calibrated: these are clean, functional, air-conditioned rooms in a port city, not a resort. That is entirely fine for one night, and the contrast with the boat the next morning is part of the pleasure.
Book somewhere with an early breakfast or accept that you will skip it. Embarkation mornings start early, and the cruise director would rather have you on deck at 08:00 with a coffee in hand than in a hotel restaurant waiting for eggs.
What if a flight is delayed anyway?
Tell us immediately — the same hour, not the next morning. With enough notice a departure can sometimes be held briefly, a guest can be run out to the vessel by fast boat at the first anchorage, or the itinerary can be reordered so the first dive day is close to Waisai. None of that is possible if the first we hear is a message from the arrivals hall.

Can I fly into Waisai instead of Sorong?
There is a small airstrip on Waigeo, but scheduled service is limited and liveaboard logistics are built around Sorong. Plan on DEO.
Is there an international flight to Sorong?
No. You clear immigration at your Indonesian entry point and continue domestically.
How early should the buffer night be booked?
At the same time as the cruise. Sorong has limited good rooms and peak-season liveaboard weeks fill them.
Do I need cash in Sorong?
Bring some. ATMs exist in Sorong and effectively do not once you sail. Small-denomination rupiah is useful for village visits and handicrafts.
Can I leave a suitcase behind while I cruise?
Usually yes — hotels and agents in Sorong will store a bag. Confirm it with us in advance rather than assuming.
How long is the drive from the airport to the harbour?
Short. Sorong is compact; the risk in your journey is in the air, not on the ground.
