Short answer: The Dampier Strait is the channel between Waigeo and Batanta in central Raja Ampat, and it is the most fish-dense water in the archipelago — Cape Kri holds the world’s most-cited single-dive fish diversity record, 374 species logged in 90 minutes by Dr Gerald R. Allen in 2012. It is also the easiest area to reach: Kri, Arborek and Manta Sandy are 30–60 minutes by speedboat from Waisai. Why is the Dampier Strait the default Raja Ampat route?
Three reasons, in order of importance. First, biodiversity: the strait funnels nutrient-rich water between two big islands, and the resulting current feeds an extraordinary density of fish. Raja Ampat as a whole holds more than 550 reef-building coral species — roughly three-quarters of all known species — and more than 1,500 reef fish species; the Dampier Strait is where that concentration is most visible on a single dive. Second, access: it is close to Waisai and reachable from Sorong on one overnight passage. Third, variety: manta cleaning stations, high-current seamounts, a jetty dive and a shallow coral garden all sit within a morning’s cruising of each other.

Water sits at 27–30 °C all year, so a 3 mm shorty is plenty for most people doing three or four dives a day. The richest life is consistently in the top 10–20 m, which is also why snorkellers do so well here.
How demanding is the current?
Honestly: more than most people expect. Cape Kri, Sardine Reef and Blue Magic can run hard, and the technique is different from lazy tropical drift diving. Expect negative entries, reef hooks, and briefings that talk about where to hide from the flow rather than where to swim. We ask for Advanced Open Water or equivalent with recent logged dives for the strong sites, and we will happily route a less experienced group through Mioskon, Arborek and the sheltered reefs instead. Manta Sandy is the exception and the opposite discipline: you kneel or hover behind a line on the sand and stay still while mantas queue at the cleaning bommies. Moving towards them ends the encounter for everybody.
When are the mantas here?
Reef manta activity in the Dampier Strait runs roughly November to April, with the strongest concentration around December to February. Misool’s Magic Mountain has a longer window, roughly September to June, which is one reason long itineraries combine both. Nobody guarantees mantas; anyone who does is selling something other than diving.

Is the 374-fish-species record real?
Yes. Ichthyologist Dr Gerald R. Allen recorded 374 reef fish species on a single 90-minute dive at Cape Kri in 2012. It remains the most-cited single-dive fish diversity record in the world. You will not count them, but you will feel them.
How many dives per day?
Three, plus an optional night dive. A seven-day liveaboard typically delivers 18–25+ dives across 12–18 sites.
Do I need nitrox?
Not required, but useful with three or four repetitive dives a day. It is normally available at a surcharge — confirm per vessel when you book.
Where do we embark?
Either Sorong harbour, with an overnight passage east, or Waisai after the fast ferry from Sorong (about two hours; ticket classes quoted around IDR 250,000 VIP and IDR 125,000 economy). Can beginners dive the Dampier Strait?
Open Water divers with good buoyancy can dive Mioskon, Arborek Jetty, Friwen and the shallower reefs. For Cape Kri, Blue Magic and Sardine Reef we want Advanced and current experience.
What about seasickness?
The strait itself is generally sheltered compared with the northern and southern crossings. The Sorong overnight leg is the main exposure — medicate before dinner.
Is there a hyperbaric chamber nearby?
The nearest recompression facilities are on the Indonesian mainland, which is exactly why dive insurance covering evacuation is a condition of diving with us. Conservative profiles, computers and a safety-stop culture matter more here than anywhere.
Can we mix divers and non-divers in one group?
