Short answer: Eleven nights is the shortest voyage that lets one phinisi link Wayag in the far north, the Dampier Strait in the centre and Misool in the deep south without turning the trip into a delivery run. It exists because of arithmetic: a traditional phinisi cruises at 8–9 knots, Sorong to Misool is an overnight passage of 10–12 hours, and the central islands to Wayag is another 4–6 hours each way. A grand voyage typically delivers 28–35 dives, and indicative whole-boat market rates run from about USD 5,500 per night (10 guests) to USD 13,500–20,000 for ultra-luxury vessels. Why does linking north and south need ten nights or more?
Raja Ampat covers around 1,500 islands, cays and shoals inside a marine protected area network of roughly one million hectares. Wayag and Misool sit at opposite ends of it. On a seven-night trip you can do the north or the south, plus the centre, and do them well — that is the 8D7N week. Attempt both and you spend three of seven nights under way.
At eleven nights the sums work. Two nights of long passage buy you access to two entirely different regions: Wayag’s bare limestone cones and shark-nursery lagoons, and Misool’s soft-coral pinnacles inside a 120,000-hectare privately managed no-take reserve. The centre — Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Manta Sandy — sits between them as the connective tissue rather than the destination.

Direction is a real decision, not a detail. Running north first and finishing in Misool usually works better because the Misool return passage lands you in Sorong for a morning disembarkation. Your captain will flip it if the forecast says so.
Why does 8–9 knots matter so much?
A phinisi is a working hull, not a fast one. Eight or nine knots means a 100-nautical-mile leg is an eleven-hour passage, which is why every long move on this route happens overnight while you sleep. It also means the itinerary cannot absorb a lost day. If weather pins the boat for 24 hours at Wayag, something further down the route gets shortened — usually the Fam day, occasionally a Misool day. That is the honest trade of a long voyage and it is why we brief it up front rather than in a footnote.

Who books an eleven-night grand voyage?
- Dive clubs and groups of 8–14 who fill a boat and want the whole archipelago in one trip.

- Repeat visitors who have already done a central week and want the ends of the archipelago.
It suits people less well if this is your first liveaboard, if you are nervous in open water, or if you need reliable connectivity — some upper-mid phinisi now carry Starlink, but plan for long stretches with nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Is twelve or fourteen nights better than eleven?
Fourteen nights adds slack, which on a weather-dependent route is worth more than extra sites. If your leave allows it, take the buffer. Eleven is the minimum for the full north-centre-south line.
How many dives should we expect?
Roughly 28–35 across the voyage, at three to four per day on diving days including night dives, minus the long passage days.
When is the best time to run it?
Inside the main Raja Ampat liveaboard season, roughly October to April or May. Manta activity in the Dampier Strait peaks December to February; Misool’s Magic Mountain mantas are reliable roughly September to June. Most vessels reposition June to September when seas are roughest.
What happens if Wayag is unreachable?
The route substitutes Kawe, Uranie and northern Gam and reallocates the time south. You are told at the time, not after.
Can we start or end in Waisai instead of Sorong?
Yes for one end, usually. Waisai is reached by fast ferry from Sorong in about two hours, with ticket classes quoted around IDR 250,000 VIP and IDR 125,000 economy, and check-in commonly around 11:30 at the Marine Park Office. Details on phinisi from Sorong.
Can we add the Banda Sea or Triton Bay?
Those are separate crossings that need their own weeks and different seasons. Ask us — we plan them as repositioning voyages rather than extensions.
Is a private charter really cheaper than cabins for a group?
Frequently, at eight guests or more. Divide the nightly whole-boat rate by your guest count and compare with the USD 300–500 or USD 600–700+ per-person bands. You also gain route control, which on an eleven-night voyage is worth real money.
What about laundry, resupply and fresh food over eleven nights?
Vessels provision in Sorong and top up fresh produce and fuel where possible en route. Water makers, laundry and dietary requirements are vessel-specific — ask when you enquire, and see what’s included on board.
