Raja Ampat Phinisi 6D5N — Central & Fam Signature Voyage

Short answer: Five nights is the shortest Raja Ampat phinisi trip that feels like a proper voyage rather than a sampler. It covers the Dampier Strait plus the Fam and Piaynemo group with time for Kabui Bay and Arborek, and delivers roughly 12–16 dives across 8–12 sites, or an equally full snorkelling and landscape programme. Whole-boat market bands start around USD 1,900 per night for an 8-guest phinisi, and cabin-level pricing on comparable Raja Ampat boats runs roughly USD 300–500 per person per night at mid-range level. Why is 6D5N the sweet spot?

Below five nights the arithmetic works against you: your first afternoon and last morning are consumed by embarkation and disembarkation, so a three-night trip has two full days in it. At five nights you get four complete days on the water plus two half days, and that is enough to reach the Fam group without rushing, dive the strait’s headline sites at the right tide, and still have an unstructured afternoon for kayaking or a village.

Above five nights the trip changes character rather than simply getting longer — seven nights lets you add the northern islands, ten lets you add Misool. If you have the time, take it. If you have a week of annual leave including flights, this is the trip that fits.

What is the day-by-day plan?

DayAreaDivesLand / surface activity
1Sorong → Dampier Strait0–1 (check-out at Mioskon if timing allows)Embark, boat and safety brief, gear set-up
2Dampier Strait3 + optional night diveCape Kri, Sardine Reef, Chicken Reef; sunset on deck
3Mansuar / Arborek3Manta Sandy, Blue Magic, Arborek Jetty; village visit and handicrafts
4Fam / Piaynemo2–3Piaynemo viewpoint at first light, Melissa’s Garden, Telaga Bintang
5Kabui Bay / Gam2–3Mangrove snorkel, kayaking, optional dawn birds-of-paradise trek at Sawinggrai
6Sorong0Disembark after breakfast; 18–24 h before flying if you have been diving

Total: roughly 12–16 dives depending on how many night dives you take and how the tides fall. Sequence flexes with weather, current windows and tide — Pasir Timbul, for example, only exists at low water.

What does a non-diver do on the same boat?

Everything except the tank part, and rather more of it. Because Raja Ampat’s densest coral sits in the top 10–20 m, snorkellers on this route see Melissa’s Garden, the Arborek jetty pilings, Friwen Wall and the Kabui Bay mangroves at full quality. Add the Piaynemo staircase, Telaga Bintang, the sandbar and the village walks and a non-diver’s day is genuinely full. Detail on the snorkelling cruise page.

Frequently asked questions

How many dives will I actually get?

Realistically 12–16 on a five-night trip, three per day plus optional night dives, minus the embarkation afternoon. A full seven-night week pushes that to 18–25+.

Do we embark in Sorong or Waisai?

Both patterns exist. Sorong embarkation means an overnight steam east; Waisai embarkation means taking the fast ferry from Sorong — about two hours, ticket classes quoted around IDR 250,000 VIP and IDR 125,000 economy — with check-in commonly around 11:30 at the Marine Park Office. We advise per itinerary; see from Sorong.

Can we reach Misool or Wayag on five nights?

No. Misool is an overnight 10–12 hour passage from Sorong and Wayag is 4–6 hours each way from the centre. Both need seven nights minimum.

Is nitrox available?

Usually, at a surcharge, and it is worth it on a three-dives-a-day schedule. Availability is vessel-specific.

When is the best month?

The Raja Ampat liveaboard season runs mainly October to April or May. Manta activity in the Dampier Strait peaks roughly December to February. Many vessels reposition June to September when seas are roughest.

What certification do we need?

Open Water with good buoyancy covers the sheltered sites. For Cape Kri, Blue Magic and Sardine Reef we ask for Advanced Open Water or equivalent with recent logged dives — full guidance on phinisi diving.

Is wifi available?

Mobile coverage is patchy to absent across most of the route. Some upper-mid phinisi now carry Starlink; ask which vessels are equipped when you enquire.

Can we extend to seven nights?

Yes, availability permitting, and it changes the trip considerably — the 8D7N week adds the northern islands and a full dive week’s site count.
