Short answer: A 4D3N Raja Ampat phinisi trip is a private charter product, not a scheduled liveaboard. Almost every scheduled dive boat in Raja Ampat sells six nights or more, because the region is too spread out for anything shorter to work commercially. Three nights buys you the central Dampier Strait plus one Fam or Piaynemo day — around 8–12 dives or a full snorkelling programme — and puts Misool and Wayag physically out of reach. Can you really do Raja Ampat in four days?
You can do part of it. What you cannot do is see the archipelago. Raja Ampat spans roughly 1,500 islands, cays and shoals across an area that takes a cruising phinisi — 8 to 9 knots — the better part of a day to cross in any direction. Misool lies an overnight passage of 10–12 hours south of Sorong. Wayag is 4–6 hours each way by fast boat from the centre. Neither fits inside three nights, and any operator who offers you both in a four-day package is going to disappoint you at sea.
What does fit is the centre: the Dampier Strait, Kri and Mansuar, Arborek, Kabui Bay, and one day pushing west to the Fam group for Piaynemo and Melissa’s Garden. That is a real Raja Ampat trip. It is simply a sampler rather than an expedition.

A 5D4N version adds one full day, which in practice means two more dives and a much less rushed Fam day. If your flights allow it, take the extra night — it is the highest-value night on the whole trip.

How do you stop day 1 and day 4 being wasted?
This is the single biggest determinant of whether a short charter feels generous or thin. Sorong’s Domine Eduard Osok airport (DEO) is served by domestic flights from Jakarta (CGK), Makassar (UPG) and Manado (MDC). Most itineraries from Jakarta involve a red-eye or an early connection through Makassar or Manado.
- Arrive on the morning of day 1, not the afternoon. A late arrival means embarking at dusk and losing your first dive.
- Consider a pre-night in Sorong. One hotel night before boarding converts a stressful connection into a relaxed start and protects you against a delayed flight.
- Book a late-afternoon departure on day 4, so disembarkation is not a sprint.
- Add a post-cruise night if your international flight leaves the next day — dive tables and altitude do not mix, and 18–24 hours between last dive and flight is standard practice.

What does a short charter cost?
Because 4D3N is a private-charter product, pricing is per vessel per night, not per seat. Published Raja Ampat market bands for 2026–2027 sit at roughly USD 1,900 per night for an 8-guest phinisi, around USD 5,500 for a 10-guest vessel and around USD 8,500 for 14 guests, with ultra-luxury boats considerably higher. On a three-night trip, the fixed costs — crew mobilisation, fuel to and from Sorong, provisioning — are spread across fewer nights, so the per-night figure tends to sit at the upper end of a vessel’s range.

Is three nights worth it?
If it is the difference between going and not going, yes — the central strait alone is world-class water. If you are choosing three nights to save money, compare the per-night maths first: five or six nights is usually better value per night and vastly better value per experience.
Why do scheduled liveaboards not sell 4D3N?
Because dive-focused Raja Ampat liveaboards overwhelmingly sell 6–12 nights: 7D6N central, 8D7N south plus central, 9D8N extended, up to 11–14 nights for north-south combinations. The distances make shorter scheduled departures uneconomic.
Can we reach Wayag or Misool in four days?

Can non-divers do this trip?

Raja Ampat phinisi typically run 22–40 m with 4–7 cabins and 8–14 guests; ultra-luxury vessels take up to 18. Smaller boats are the natural fit for a short trip.
What is the best season for a short trip?
October to April or May, when the main liveaboard season runs and most vessels are in the region. Between June and September many boats reposition and sea conditions are at their roughest.
Do we still pay the full marine park fee for three nights?
Yes — the conservation fee is per visitor, not per night. Budget around USD 100 per person and confirm the current tariff close to travel; see permits and fees.
Can we upgrade to a longer trip later?
