Why do you need a boat to reach Wayag?
Wayag has no accommodation, no village and no scheduled transport. Every photograph you have seen of those pale green cones rising out of turquoise water was taken by somebody who arrived on a vessel. Day-tripping from the Dampier Strait means four to six hours of open-water running each way in a speedboat, most of it wasted, and it depends entirely on the sea behaving. A phinisi covers the same distance overnight at 8–9 knots while you sleep, and you wake up already inside the lagoon system with the whole day ahead of you.
That single fact — the boat moves at night, you explore by day — is the entire argument for a liveaboard in northern Raja Ampat. It is also why the north route pairs naturally with the central Dampier Strait diving route rather than replacing it.

How hard is the Wayag viewpoint climb?
It is a scramble, not a staircase. The route up the main karst cone is bare limestone — sharp, sun-baked and steep, with rope and root handholds in places. Reckon on 20–40 minutes up depending on fitness, in closed shoes with grip, not flip-flops. Gloves help because the rock cuts. Most crews run the climb at first light or late afternoon: the light is better, the heat is survivable, and the lagoon colour peaks when the sun is high enough to reach the water but not directly overhead. If the climb is not for you, the view from the tender inside the lagoon is still extraordinary, and nobody on board will mind.
Drones are popular here. Fly them away from other guests and never over villages or people without asking — Raja Ampat communities own their land and their airspace in every sense that matters socially, even where regulation is thin.

What should you pack for a north expedition?
- Closed shoes with real grip for the Wayag scramble, plus reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.
- A 3 mm shorty or skin: water is 27–30 °C but three or four dives a day still cool you.
- Reusable water bottle — single-use plastic is restricted across Raja Ampat and on our boats.
- Seasickness medication taken before the overnight legs, not after they begin.
- Cash in rupiah for village handicrafts, entry contributions and crew gratuities.

Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Wayag on a day trip instead?
Technically yes, from Waisai, but it means roughly 4–6 hours each way in a speedboat in open water, weather permitting, for a couple of hours ashore. Most people who try it once do not repeat it.
Is there diving at Wayag or is it just scenery?
Both. Kawe, Uranie and the northern reefs offer genuine dive sites with strong coral cover and pelagic passes; Wayag itself is more about the lagoons, the shallow nursery sharks and the landscape. The world-class high-current sites remain in the Dampier Strait.
How many nights do I need for Wayag?
Seven is the practical minimum from Sorong. Ten nights lets you add Misool in the south as well — that is the grand voyage.
What is the best season?
Raja Ampat liveaboards run mainly October to April or May, and most vessels reposition from June to September when seas are roughest. The north is the first region to be dropped in bad weather, so book inside the main season if Wayag is your priority.
Are there baby sharks in the lagoon?
Wayag’s shallow lagoons are a well-known nursery area for juvenile blacktip reef sharks. They come and go with tide and time of day, so treat a sighting as likely rather than guaranteed — and never feed or chase them. Raja Ampat has been a declared shark and manta sanctuary since around 2013.
Is there phone signal or wifi?
Effectively none at Wayag. Some upper-mid phinisi now carry Starlink, which changes this completely; ask us which vessels in the fleet are equipped when you enquire.
Do I need a marine park permit?
Yes. Every visitor to Raja Ampat pays a marine park conservation fee — budget around USD 100 per person as a planning figure and confirm the current tariff close to travel. It is normally issued or verified at the Marine Park Office in Waisai. See permits and fees.
Can families with children do the north route?
