Short answer: A private phinisi is the only Raja Ampat format where a family sets its own pace — no fixed dive schedule, no strangers at dinner, and a route you can shorten the moment a child has had enough. Vessels run 4–7 cabins for 8–14 guests, which suits two or three families or a multi-generation group, and the calm-water central route around the Dampier Strait, Arborek, Kabui Bay and the Fam islands avoids the roughest overnight legs entirely. Why charter privately with children?
Because a shared liveaboard runs on the dive plan, and children do not. On a scheduled boat, breakfast is at 06:00 because the first dive is at 07:00, the tender leaves whether your eight-year-old is ready or not, and an afternoon of “we would rather just swim off the back” is not on the programme. On a private charter the crew works to your family, which in practice means a later start, a longer lunch, two shorter water sessions instead of one long one, and a beach or village stop when energy drops.

How do the cabins work for families?

Most mid-range and better phinisi have en-suite bathrooms and individually controlled air conditioning in every cabin. Twin cabins convert to doubles on many vessels, and a master cabin is usually available for the guests who most need the space. Extra beds and connecting arrangements are vessel-specific — tell us the ages at enquiry and we will match the layout rather than the brochure.

Which route is right for families?
The central archipelago. The Dampier Strait, Mansuar, Arborek, Friwen, Kabui Bay and the Fam group are sheltered, close together and reachable without long open-water crossings. Misool needs an overnight passage of 10–12 hours from Sorong, and Wayag sits 4–6 hours each way from the centre — both are magnificent and both are hard on small children and anyone prone to seasickness. For older teenagers who dive, the north becomes reasonable; see the 8D7N north and central week.

What about safety on board?
- Child-sized life jackets and snorkel vests — tell us ages and weights at booking so the right sizes are aboard before departure.
- Guide in the water with every snorkelling group, not watching from the tender.
- Tender rules — seated, jackets on, no standing under way. Crew enforce this with children regardless of what parents allow.
- Crew ratios — mid-size phinisi typically carry a crew close in number to their guests, so there are always hands available.
- Reef briefing for children — no touching, no standing on coral, no collecting. Kids follow it better than adults when it is explained as a rule of the place.
- Emergency oxygen and first aid on board; insurance covering evacuation is required for anyone diving.
What about food?
Every phinisi carries a cook, and meals are included. Fussy eaters, allergies, halal, vegetarian and toddler food are all normal requests — send the list at booking, because provisioning happens in Sorong and there is no supermarket downstream. Fresh fruit, rice, noodles, grilled fish and simple pasta cover most children comfortably. Drinking water, tea, coffee and soft drinks are included; alcohol usually is not.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum age?
We do not set a blanket minimum for snorkelling and cruising; we assess the route against the ages. For a calm central itinerary, primary-school children travel very happily. For long open-water legs to Misool or Wayag we would ask you to reconsider with under-eights.
Can children try scuba?
Discover Scuba style experiences and junior certification courses are possible with a qualified instructor on board and parental consent, subject to agency age minimums. It has to be arranged before departure so the right instructor and kit are aboard.
How rough is it?
The central route is largely sheltered. The main exposure is the Sorong overnight passage at each end. Medicate before dinner rather than after the swell starts, and choose a mid-ship lower cabin for anyone susceptible.
Is there wifi for teenagers?
Coverage is patchy to absent across most of Raja Ampat. Some upper-mid phinisi carry Starlink — ask which vessels are equipped. Many parents deliberately choose one that is not.
What if a child gets sick or hurt?
Basic first aid and oxygen are on board and the crew includes trained personnel. Serious cases mean a run to Waisai or Sorong, which is why we keep families on the central route where that run is short. Comprehensive travel insurance is required.
How many nights for a first family trip?
Five. Three works if flights force it (see the 4D3N charter), but the fifth night is where the trip stops feeling rushed.
Which season is best with children?
October to April or May, the main liveaboard season, with calmer seas and most vessels in the region. Christmas and New Year book out six to twelve months ahead.
Can grandparents who do not swim enjoy it?
Yes. Villages, karst viewpoints from the tender, kayaking, birdwatching at Sawinggrai and a shaded top deck fill the day without entering the water at all.
