Raja Ampat Phinisi 8D7N — North & Central Diving Week

Short answer: Seven nights is the benchmark Raja Ampat diving week, and it is the duration the entire liveaboard market is built around. A 8D7N phinisi voyage typically delivers 18–25+ dives across 12–18 sites at three to four dives per day including night dives, covering the Dampier Strait plus the northern islands — Kawe, Uranie and, weather permitting, Wayag. For comparison, published 2026 scheduled-boat rates for a 7D6N central Raja Ampat trip in a twin en-suite cabin sit around USD 3,150 per person, with 8D7N south-and-central around USD 3,600. Why is seven nights the industry standard?

Because it is the shortest trip that lets a vessel commit to a full region without spending a third of its time in transit. Dive-focused Raja Ampat liveaboards overwhelmingly sell 6–12 nights: 7D6N central, 8D7N south plus central, 9D8N extended, and 11–14 nights for north-and-south combinations. At seven nights you clear the Sorong transits at each end and still have five to six complete diving days.

It also matches how divers actually build a trip: enough repetition to get properly comfortable in current, enough sites to see genuine variety, and enough surface intervals to visit villages and karst without cannibalising the dive plan. Shorter trips exist — see the 6D5N signature voyage — but they are sampler routes.

What does the north-and-central week look like?

DayAreaDivesNotes
1Sorong → east0–1Embark afternoon, brief, overnight passage
2Dampier Strait3 + nightMioskon check-out, Cape Kri, Sardine Reef
3Mansuar / Arborek3Manta Sandy, Blue Magic, Arborek Jetty; village visit
4Northern Gam / Kabui Bay3Citrus Ridge area, mangroves, kayaking; dawn birds-of-paradise trek option
5Kawe / Uranie3Northern reefs and pinnacles; overnight positioning
6Wayag (weather-dependent)2 + landscapeSummit scramble, lagoon kayaking, blacktip nursery shallows
7Fam / Piaynemo2–3Piaynemo viewpoint at first light, Melissa’s Garden

Wayag is the weather-sensitive element. The leg from the central islands to Wayag runs 4–6 hours by fast boat, and a cruising phinisi at 8–9 knots takes it overnight. When wind and swell close it, the crew substitutes Kawe, Uranie and northern Gam — still excellent diving, simply without the postcard. Any operator who guarantees Wayag in writing in marginal months is guaranteeing something they do not control. The dedicated route is on our Wayag expedition page.

How many dives, and on what?

DayDive 1Dive 2Dive 3Night dive
2Mioskon (to ~24 m, mild)Cape Kri (5–25 m, strong drift)Sardine Reef (10–30 m, strong)Yes

6Wayag reefLagoon shallowsNo
7Melissa’s Garden (5–25 m, light)Fam reefNo

That is 18–22 dives across roughly 14 sites, which is squarely in the published benchmark of 18–25+ dives on a seven-day liveaboard. Water is 27–30 °C year-round; most dives run 10–40 m with the richest life in the top 10–20 m.

What is the dive operation actually like on board?

Mid-range and better phinisi carry a dedicated dive deck with a numbered station per diver, tank racks, rinse tanks for cameras and computers, and one or two tenders so groups can be dropped separately on drift sites. Guide ratios are typically one guide to four divers; on private charters we can tighten that. Nitrox is normally available at a surcharge, and equipment rental is charged separately. Vessels run around 22–40 m with 4–7 cabins, en-suite bathrooms and individually controlled air conditioning at this level. Vessel-by-vessel specifics are on the fleet page.

How does the price compare with scheduled boats?

ProductBasisPublished 2026 market reference
Scheduled 7D6N central, twin en-suitePer person~USD 3,150
Scheduled 8D7N south + central, twin en-suitePer person~USD 3,600
Scheduled 9D8N extended, twin en-suitePer person~USD 3,900
Private whole boat, 10 guestsPer night~USD 5,500
Private whole boat, 14 guestsPer night~USD 8,500

The maths that decides private versus per-cabin is simple: divide the whole-boat nightly rate by your realistic guest count and compare it with the per-person band of USD 300–500 (mid-range) or USD 600–700+ (luxury). Groups of eight or more usually find a private charter competitive, and they get route control on top. Per-cabin options are on our cabin charter page; the pricing logic is at charter rates.

Excluded in all cases: flights to Sorong (DEO), marine park and conservation fees (budget roughly USD 100 per person), nitrox, rental gear, alcohol, gratuities and insurance.

Frequently asked questions

What certification do I need for a full week?

Advanced Open Water or equivalent with recent logged dives is the practical standard for the high-current sites — Cape Kri, Sardine Reef, Blue Magic. Open Water divers can complete the week with a modified site list.

Is dive insurance mandatory?

With us, yes. Raja Ampat is remote and the nearest recompression facilities are far away, so cover that includes emergency evacuation is a condition of diving.

Do I need a reef hook?

For the strait’s strong sites, yes. It is used to hold position on dead substrate — never on live coral — and it is standard equipment on this route.

Will I definitely see mantas?

No guarantees. Reef manta activity in the Dampier Strait is strongest roughly November to April, peaking December to February; Misool’s Magic Mountain runs roughly September to June.

Can non-divers join a seven-night dive week?

Yes, and on a private charter the tender runs a parallel snorkel and land programme. See the snorkelling cruise.

How far in advance should we book?

For high season — December to February and the Christmas and New Year weeks in particular — six to twelve months is normal for the better vessels. Shoulder months can sometimes be had at shorter notice.

What if the weather closes Wayag?

The crew reroutes to Kawe, Uranie and northern Gam. That is a re-plan, not a downgrade — and it is written into how we sell the route.

Should I add nights?

If you want Misool as well as the north, yes — that is the 11-night grand voyage, the only duration that links both without rushing.
