Short answer: Pick the month first, the route second, the boat third — in that order, and never the other way round. Good phinisi for December to February are commonly gone nine to twelve months ahead. Budget the cruise fare plus flights, the marine park conservation fee (budget ~USD 100 per person), a night in Sorong, tips and any gear. Then choose length honestly: four nights buys you the Dampier Strait, seven buys you a region done properly, eleven buys you the whole archipelago.
Why does the month come first?
Because it decides everything downstream. Most liveaboards work Raja Ampat from October to April or May and reposition elsewhere in Indonesia from June to September, when seas are roughest. If your only available holiday is in August, you are not choosing between routes — you are choosing between a very short list of year-round boats and a different destination.
Within the season, the month shapes the route. December to February is peak for Dampier Strait mantas. Misool’s Magic Mountain runs a longer manta window, roughly September to June. Published market figures for Raja Ampat, so you can build a realistic budget rather than react to a single headline price:
- Budget shared-cabin phinisi: from around USD 170 per person per night.
- Scheduled mid-range: typically USD 300–500 per person per night.
- Luxury: USD 600–700+ per person per night.

Those are indicative published market bands, not our fixed tariff — they exist to calibrate expectations. How many nights do you actually need?
This is the question people get wrong most often, usually by underestimating distance. A phinisi cruises at 8–9 knots. Misool is ten to twelve hours south of Sorong. Wayag is four to six hours north of the central islands by fast boat. Those numbers are not negotiable, and they are what determine what your nights buy.
- 3–4 nights: Dampier Strait only — Cape Kri, Manta Sandy, Arborek, Mioskon. No Misool, no Wayag. Available as a private charter rather than a scheduled trip. See the 4D3N package.
- 5–6 nights: Central done properly, with repeat attempts at the manta sites and a run out to Fam and Piaynemo.
- 7–8 nights: The sweet spot. One region thoroughly plus a genuine excursion into a second — typically 18–25+ dives across 12–18 sites.
- 9–11+ nights: North and south in one voyage, with enough margin that losing two days to weather does not hollow out the trip.
Note that scheduled dive liveaboards overwhelmingly sell six to twelve nights. The very short itineraries exist mainly as private charters, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a three-night cabin berth.
What should you book first?
The boat. Flights are a commodity with dozens of options; a good vessel on a peak week is a single seat that either exists or does not. Hold the charter, then build the flights around the embarkation date.

What do first-timers most often get wrong?
- Arriving on embarkation day. The single most expensive mistake available to you.
- Underestimating distance. Booking four nights and expecting Wayag and Misool. The arithmetic does not permit it.
- Overpacking. Hard suitcases, formal clothes, and gear that pushes them over a domestic baggage limit.
- Overstating diving experience. The Dampier Strait’s best sites run genuinely strong current. Tell us the truth and we plan a ramp; overstate it and you spend a week uncomfortable.

- Expecting guarantees. Mantas are wild, Wayag is weather-dependent, and marine lakes can close. Any operator promising otherwise is telling you something about themselves.
- Booking late for peak dates. December to February on a good boat goes nine to twelve months ahead.
Divers or not?
Raja Ampat is world-famous for diving, and it is a mistake to assume that is all it offers. Piaynemo’s viewpoint, the Fam lagoons, Arborek’s jetty, dawn birds of paradise at Sawinggrai, Kabui Bay’s mangrove karst and the Misool lakes are all non-diving experiences of genuine quality.
On a mixed group, two tenders and a separate snorkel guide are what make it work — divers and non-divers on different plans at the same anchorage. If nobody in your group dives at all, the itinerary should be built differently from the start rather than treated as a dive trip minus the dives.
