What is Piaynemo and why is it the postcard shot?
Piaynemo sits within the Fam island group, north-west of the Dampier Strait. A wooden staircase — travellers commonly report around 300 steps, an approximate figure rather than an official count — climbs a limestone ridge to a platform above a scatter of mushroom-shaped islets in luminous shallow water. It is the single most photographed viewpoint in Raja Ampat and it earns the attention. Nearby, Telaga Bintang (“star lagoon”) is a small enclosed pool whose shape, seen from the ridge above, gives it its name; the scramble up is short but genuinely rocky.
Under the water, the same group holds Melissa’s Garden — one of the densest intact hard-coral gardens in Raja Ampat, staghorn and table coral in roughly 5–25 m of water with light to moderate current. It is one of the rare sites that works equally well for divers and snorkellers, which makes the Fam group the natural core of a mixed-ability trip.
Why does a phinisi beat a day trip here?
The day-trip fleet leaves Waisai after breakfast and arrives at Piaynemo between roughly 09:30 and 11:00. That is when the platform is crowded and the light is at its harshest. A liveaboard anchors in the group overnight, drops you at the jetty at first light, and you are back on board for breakfast before the first speedboat appears on the horizon. The same logic applies to Melissa’s Garden, which is calmest and clearest early.
There is a second reason: distance. From central Raja Ampat, Fam and Piaynemo are a full-day excursion of roughly 1.5–2 hours each way by speedboat. On a phinisi that transit happens while you sleep — see how the same principle drives the Wayag expedition further north.

Pasir Timbul only exists at low tide. It is a genuine sandbar that emerges and disappears with the tide table, so the crew schedules it around the water, not around your preference. Any itinerary that promises it at a fixed hour has not read a tide chart.
Is there a snorkel-only version of this route?
Yes, and Fam is where it works best. Melissa’s Garden, the Arborek jetty pilings with their batfish and sweetlips, Friwen Wall and the shallow reefs around Mansuar all sit within snorkelling depth. Because most of Raja Ampat’s richest coral is in the top 10–20 m, a competent snorkeller genuinely sees the good part rather than a consolation version. How many steps is the Piaynemo staircase?
Around 300, based on consistent traveller reports. We publish it as an approximation because no official count is posted at the site, and the lower section has been rebuilt more than once.
What time should we do the viewpoint?
First light. You avoid the day-trip boats, the heat and the flat midday glare. Second best is late afternoon, though colours in the lagoon fade as the sun drops.
Can we see Pasir Timbul on any day?
Only at low tide, and the low-tide window shifts by roughly 50 minutes a day. Your cruise director works it into the plan when the tide allows; some itineraries simply miss it.
Are drones allowed?
Drones are widely flown in Raja Ampat, but etiquette matters more than paperwork here. Do not fly over villages, people or the viewpoint platform when others are on it, and ask before launching near a community jetty. Local communities hold customary rights over these islands.
Is Melissa’s Garden good for beginner divers?
Yes — it is shallow, colourful and usually gentle, which makes it a favourite check-out or second-day dive. The demanding high-current sites are in the Dampier Strait.
Do we need to be strong swimmers?
For the Fam snorkelling sites, moderate swimming ability is enough, and flotation vests are carried on board. Guides enter the water with snorkellers on our charters.
Can this be combined with the birds of paradise trek?
Yes. Sawinggrai village on Gam runs early-morning treks with a chance of Red Bird of Paradise and Wilson’s Bird of Paradise. It requires a pre-dawn start and it fits neatly between Kabui Bay and the Fam group.
Which season suits this route?
The main Raja Ampat liveaboard season runs roughly October to April or May. The Fam group is more sheltered than the far north, so it holds up better in marginal weather than Wayag.
